ANDROID Welcome to the ownCloud mobile app for Android devices version 1.00! This application is optimized for Android devices running 2.3.6 and higher, specifically mobile phones and similar sized android devices. It is not designed for the high resolution associated with android tablets at this time. Using this app requires that your device supports 3rd party apps provided outside of the Google Play store. Feature Overview This client is designed to allow users to manage files on the ownCloud server: browse through the files, upload and download files, videos and photos, and delete files on the server.  Users may also create directories on the ownCloud server, and upload new files and photos created on the Android mobile device. Quick Start To begin, simply install and open the ownCloud .apk, click I’m already an ownCloud user, and enter the credentials of an operating ownCloud instance. If you would like to know more about how to install your own ownCloud instance, either at your location or hosted by a service provider, visit ownCloud.com to download and install ownCloud for free. Once logged in, you will be taken to the files tab in the app, which enables you to view the files on your ownCloud server, browse through directories, and download files by clicking on them. You can also manage files on the server by clicking on them and selecting delete, and you can add new directories by clicking the menu button, and selecting the new folder option. To refresh the view, click the menu button and select the refresh option. If you wish to upload a file, photo or video to the server, select the upload tab. Then select photo and video, or other files based on what you want to upload. On the bottom middle of the screen you will see a wide button labeled Upload: ownCloud/. This is the target directory on the server where the files will be uploaded. Select the desired target by clicking on this button, then select the file(s) and click upload. If you would like to connect to a different ownCloud instance, or simply to disconnect from the current ownCloud server, click on the Settings tab and select unlink Android from ownCloud.  You will be taken to the login screen again, where you can enter different ownCloud server details. On the settings tab, you may also find more about ownCloud, and even set a 4 digit passcode lock on the ownCloud instance. Release Notes There are a few items that we want you to know about in this version, either know bugs or features that are not obvious to the user. - If you want to exit the application in Android, click the back button when in the top directory, or select close from the app menu. - When saving a file to the device, you can select a different folder than the default owncloud directory. The “select” button in this case says “upload”, which is incorrect. This is being fixed. - When you upload a video or picture and select “abort”, you must then cancel out of the upload menu and reenter to reset the upload feature. This is being fixed. - When navigating through files and folders, click the Android back button to return up a level in the folder hierarchy. - Loading a folder with thousands of files may cause the application to crash. Currently, we are investigating this bug. We have tested folders containing 3600 files, and found that this may cause the application to crash. - Files and folders are listed in the order the ownCloud server provides them, not alphabetically. We are building a local cache to enable sorting, but at this time we cannot offer sorting of files. - Losing focus on the ownCloud application will not cause the passcode lock to engage. Only closing the application from the back button, menu button or restarting the device will force the application to close and engage the passcode lock. - Network bandwidth significantly impacts app performance as many navigation activities, uploads and downloads require calls to the server. For future versions of the ownCloud client, we are implementing a local cache, and response times in the client will improve over low bandwidth connections. - In an effort to conserve bandwidth on the devices, there are file size limits of 100MB for upload and download from Android, regardless of what you set on the server. - We do not currently support automatic syncing of files on Android devices, so users must download files and open them manually for offline viewing. - In the Upload->Photos and Videos menu, scroll with your finger vertically to load additional photo or video thumbnails. This is for performance reasons, as loading all photos and videos would take quite a long time. - Occasionally, if you upgrade to a new version of the application, a restart of the phone is needed to get the application functioning and refresh the app. If you are having difficulties, please restart the application by closing the app (menu button, back button in root directory, or restart the Android device). -There are no editors built into the ownCloud app, so downloading a file will not necessarily make it possible to edit the app. Please install the appropriate app on the Android device if you wish to edit files. Note: Active support for the Android app is provided via a subscription to ownCloud 2012 Business or Enterprise Edition. A subscription can be purchased online at ownCloud.com. Support forums are available for other users, which can be found at forum.owncloud.org. We hope you find this version of ownCloud 2012 for Android useful, providing you with the basic file capabilities that you would want on your Android device. Sincerely, The ownCloud Team
